Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui said Kenya can become a leading African digital trade hub, speaking at a digital trade workshop organised by the EBRD, reports Startup Kenya (8 October 2026).

The key points

  • The government estimates the digital economy could add Sh662 billion to GDP by 2028.
  • Gaps cited include infrastructure, logistics, financing, regulation and cross-border trade rules.
  • Safaricom and Pesapal have introduced M-Pesa tap-to-pay and dynamic QR payments, the report adds.

What it means for founders

Ambition at national level opens doors to regional and global buyers. But the same gaps the government names, logistics, payments and cross-border rules, show up in individual stores every day. Brands that solve them now will be ready when the doors open wider.

Selling beyond Kenya starts with a store built for it.
