Social media is not just where Kenyan brands get seen. For many buyers, it is where they shop.

What the data says

  • A Sagaci Research survey put social commerce penetration in Kenya at 65%, meaning that share of respondents had bought or sold on social media (Sagaci Research, 2024).
  • The Communications Authority of Kenya's customer survey found WhatsApp accounted for 20.2% of online order placements, as reported by ITWeb Africa (January 2026).

What it means for founders

Attention on social is not the hard part. Turning that attention into a paid order is. Content that gets likes but has no clear path to buy leaves money in the comments.

Content earns the interest. The system has to close the sale.
